    Creativity and Digitalization.Evgeniy V. Maslanov - 2022 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 59 (3):38-45.
This article is a part of the discussion of Ilya Kasavin’s article “Creativity as a social phenomenon” and is devoted to the analysis of creativity in the era of digitalization. The author discusses creativity in computer programs and the actions of assistant robots. They can be creative because they are able to find new solutions to various problems. The Go program used new strategies that human players had never played before; another program predicted the crystal structure of various substances that (...)

Rational Foundations of Creative Consciousness in Science.Nadezhda D. Astashova & Evgeny V. Maslanov - 2023 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 60 (1):34-42.
This is a reply to the article by A.M. Dorozhkin, S.V. Shibarshina “Epistemological Randomization, or On Creativity in Science”. The comprehension of the general philosophical problems of scientific rationality is inextricably linked with the creative development of the world. An actual philosophical position can be formed on the basis of the intersection of several alternative approaches. The first is connected with the understanding of rationality as a special style of thinking of the epoch, in which the coordinate system of the (...)

Pattern Without Process: Eugen Smirnov and the Earliest Project of Numerical Taxonomy (1923–1938).Maxim V. Vinarski - 2022 - Journal of the History of Biology 55 (3):559-583.
The progress towards mathematization or, in a broader context, towards an increased “objectivity” is one of the main trends in the development of biological systematics in the past century. It is commonplace to start the history of numerical taxonomy with the works of R. R. Sokal and P. H. A. Sneath that in the 1960s laid the foundations of this school of taxonomy. In this article, I discuss the earliest research program in this field, developed in the 1920s by the (...)

Avivakṣitavācya-dhvani and the Deterritorialization of Signifier: A Liberating Experience for Language, Author and Reader.V. S. Sreenath - 2017 - Journal of Indian Philosophy 45 (5):817-836.
This paper aims to make an anti-canonical reading of the avivakṣitavācya-variety of dhvani conceptualized by the ninth century Sanskrit literary critic Ānandavardhana in his seminal work Dhvanyāloka. In this paper, I argue that avivakṣitavācya-dhvani opens up a signifier to new significations that are not conventionally associated with it through a process of deterritorialization. In any language, convention functions as a structuring mechanism upon a signifier by clearly demarcating a rigid semantic ambit for it. By the term ‘conventional semantic ambit’, I (...)

    Sopholab: Experimental computational philosophy.V. Wiegel - 2007 - Dissertation,
In this book, the extend to which we can equip artificial agents with moral reasoning capacity is investigated. Attempting to create artificial agents with moral reasoning capabilities challenges our understanding of morality and moral reasoning to its utmost. It also helps philosophers dealing with the inherent complexity of modern organizations. Modern society with large multi-national organizations and extensive information infrastructures provides a backdrop for moral theories that is hard to encompass through mere theorising. Computerized support for theorising is needed to (...)

The Enactivist Self- Virtual or Autonomous?V. Sridharan - 2015 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 22 (7-8):183-200.
In his foundational enactivist writings, Francisco Varela explained the self as 'virtual', 'fictional', and 'groundless'. More recent enactivist scholars have taken issue with Varela's analysis, elevating the self to the same ontological status as other biological processes. On their interpretation, our 'self' can be considered an autonomous system in the same manner as cells, organs, and organisms. After discussing the enactivist's definition of an autonomous system, this paper examines the lack of clarity from more recent scholars around precisely how our (...)

    A behaviorist analysis of emotions.V. J. McGill & Livingston Welch - 1946 - Philosophy of Science 13 (April):100-122.
Since James defined emotion as consciousness of bodily reactions and Cannon and others detailed the nature of these reactions, there has been an increasing tendency among behaviorists to equate emotions with visceral reactions and to neglect some of the genetic and adaptive aspects of emotion which had been discussed by Darwin.

  20. Renegade instances.V. C. Aldrich - 1936 - Philosophy of Science 3 (4):506-514.
Attention has been drawn, particularly since Kant, to propositions which can not have negative instances. They used to be called a priori, axioms, first principles. Today, they are usually called postulates—C. I. Lewis uses both the old and new terminology—because there is a growing recognition of the fact that at least some of them are not “necessary” in the traditional sense. Kant placed a limitation on the apriorism of the continental rationalists. Current epistemologists and logicians have outstripped Kant in the (...)

Hume on what there is.V. C. Chappell - 1971 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Lectures 5:88-98.
Ontology was never Hume's main interest, but he certainly had opinions as to what there is, and he often expressed these in his philosophical works. Indeed it seems clear that Hume changed his ontological views while writing the Treatise, and that not just one but two different ontologies are to be found there. The ontology of Parts I, II, and III of Book I is more or less Lockean. There are minds and their operations and qualities. There are physical entities, (...)

Methodological Problems in the Investigation of the Contemporary Scientific-Technical Revolution and the Forming of the New Human Being.V. I. Shinkaruk - 1976 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 15 (1):4-8.
Among the numerous philosophical problems associated with analysis of the current revolution in science and technology, the problem of the revolution in the productive forces of society holds a place of importance. The revolution in science and technology brought the problem of the revolution in the productive forces into the foreground, along with the problems of the social revolution as a revolution in the entire system of societal relations.
